Austria lies in the very heart of Europe. It shares the boarder with a record number of neighbour countries (8 different states). More than 60% of the country consists of mountains and uplands so its not a suprise that the downhills and ski jumping are regarded as national sports. The legend says there isnt a man who born in Austirawould hate the mountains. The highlands are the biggest tourist attractions and symbol of the whole country. The landscapes with postglacial valleys and lakes and the majestic summits are breathtaking and a reason enough to charm millions of tourists all year long. Austia highest mountain is Grossglockner (3798 m AMSL) located in High Tauren range. Its name means "The Big Bell" because of the mountain bell like shape.
Scheduled program
Katowice - Kals - refugee Stüdl (2801 m AMSL) - refuge Erzherzog - Johann Hutte refugee (3454 m AMSL) - Grossglockner (3798 m AMSL)
We begin our journey in Kals in the valley of Kodnitz. This is where we begin to climb. On our way we pass two mountain refuges: Lücknerhaus (1920 m AMSL) and Stüdl (2801 m AMSL) and the highest located hostel in the Austrian Alps- Erzherzog Johann Hutte (3454 m AMSL). The trail is covered with ice and snow in its lower part, while the upper part consists mostly of sharp and edgy rock mass so the road can be tough (II difficulty level of climbing). The most difficult distance spreads from Kleinglockner (Little Bell) peak to the Big Bell summit. You can pass it in 2 days with good weather conditions. We will have four days to reach to our destination. The final outcome of the expedition is based on our condition and the weather.
