Italy is a true potentate on European tourism market. The boot-shaped peninsula has a lot to offer
to travelers. Beautiful landscapes of Piedmont, dreamy Mediterranean villages of Sicily and Sardinia
where languorous rhythm of life never change, famous Adriatic shoreline and eternal cities of Rome,
Milan and Florence well known for their illustrious monuments and museums. The Alps attracts those who
love skiing, especially in the middle of winter. If one can trust a traditional Italian song whoever
visits the country would never resist the beauty of the region.
Mont Rosa (Monte Rosa massif) is situated on a shared border between Italy and Switzerland. This
huge glacier is surrounded by ten summits of over 4000 meters AMSL each. Mont Rosa is accompanied by
the second highest peak of the Alps- Duforspitze (4643 m AMSL). Other summits include: Nordend (4609
m AMSL), Punta Gnifetti (4554 m AMSL), Corno Nero (4322 m AMSL), Zumsteinspitze (4563 m AMSL), Ludwigshöhe
(4341 m AMSL), Punta Parrot (4436 m AMSL), Punta Giordani (4046 m AMSL), Balmenhorn (4167 m AMSL), Signalkuppe
(4556 m AMSL) and Piramide Vincent (4215 m AMSL). All trails are snow and ice covered and easily accessible,
but that doesn't make them safe for novices!
Scheduled program
Katowice - Gessoney - Lago Gabiet - Mantova refugee - Piramide Vincent (4215 m AMSL) - Gnifetti refugee - Balmenhorn (4167 m AMSL) - Corno Nero (4322 m AMSL) - Zumsteinspitze (4563 m AMSL) - Regina Margherita refugee (4554 m AMSL) - Ludwigshöhe (4341 m AMSL) - Parrotspitze (4436 m AMSL) - Punta Giordani (4046 m AMSL)
We arrive at Gresoney. From the town we are taking gondola ride straight to Lago Gabinet station
(2350 m AMSL) and continue our trip until we reach Mantova hostel (3535 m AMSL) or additionally
Gnifetti hostel (3647 m AMSL). One of them will serve as our base during various mountain expeditions.
Our goal is to capture as many summits as possible in a short period of time. Please note that we will
have to take the weather and condition of our participants into consideration. We plan to spend one night
at the Capanna Regina Margherita Hostel. This is Europe's highest located hostel (4554 m.), positioned
on Punta Gnifetti mount. On our way down we are going to reach the top of Zumsteinspitze (4563 m. AMSL)
and there will also be a chance to climb on Ludwigshöhe (4341 m AMSL) and Parrotspitze (4436 m AMSL).
Two remaining summits Duforspitze and Nordend are too tough to be sized from the Italian side of the
boarder because of II and III level of difficulty of the climbing and fragile terrain. Having the ever
changing weather on our side, we will be able to reach Balmenhorn hostel (4167 m AMSL) to spend
a night there. Additionally we can attempt to capture the Lyskamm mountain (4527 m AMSL) or find
some rest in the green valleys that lie at the feet of Mont Rosa or sightsee one of the villages
on our way back home.
